What
do we do?
S4L, working
in partnership
with the
GP surgeries
of Ladywood,
has been
delivering
a walking
group programme
for obese,
sedentary
and unfit
individuals
of the
area, helping
to provide
an easy,
first-step
into the
world of
exercise.
Sessions
cater for
all ages
and abilities,
including
those with
physical
or mental
disabilities,
and focus
upon 5
key objectives – get
healthy,
lose weight,
be active,
feel more
positive,
and make
new friends.

What have
we achieved?
An innovative
referral
system
has enabled
health
professionals,
for the
first time,
to refer
patients
to group-orientated
and local
exercise
classes;
the perceived
safety
and accessibility
of local
green spaces
has improved
amongst
our clients;
and many
have begun
to incorporate
sustainable
transport
into their
daily routines.

What
do our
clients
think?
“it
is better
than walking
by yourself...and
the classes
are good
for all
levels
of fitness
and social
background” Cordelia

What
do our
partner
organisations
think?
“encouraging
physical
activity
amongst
sedentary
individuals
can have
a huge
beneficial
impact
on public
health
in the
South Birmingham
PCT. It
is the
support
of third
sector
organisations
such as
Sport 4
Life UK,
moreover,
that must
be utilised
in order
to ensure
that the
promotion
of physical
activity
becomes
a reality
on the
ground
level.”
Chris
Spencer-Jones,
Director
of Public
Health,
South Birmingham
